Local Expert Gardener Kicks-Off Winter Revitalization Efforts for Independence Community Garden

Sep 9, 2026

A winter revitalization project for the Independence Community Garden and greenhouse is underway, with long-time local resident and garden expert Annette McFadden preparing the garden and greenhouse for the winter and future growing seasons.

The project will continue the hard work of the current community garden leaders, Melanie Sprague and Jennifer Dougan, and numerous residents who have invested their time and efforts to keep the garden thriving over the years. During the revitalization effort, McFadden will work with residents to enhance the beauty of the community garden and greenhouse while introducing sustainable gardening practices, including biochar soil amendment.

“Our plan is to build on the momentum created by the current garden leaders and help the garden shine,” said Annette McFadden. “We want to create a place where people feel inspired to grow, learn, and spend time together. We hope the Independence gardening community will continue to take ownership of the garden, and we’re excited to work together to grow it successfully.”

McFadden is already working on cleanup and greenhouse preparations with a long-term vision to create an interactive learning space where community members can develop growing skills and help shape the garden’s future.

Throughout the winter months, winter revitalization plans will include:

  • Basic gardening classes, covering raised-bed gardening, seasonal crop recommendations, and sustainable practices including biochar soil amendment.
  • Greenhouse planting, including flowers grown from seed and winter vegetable crops.
  • Expanded landscaping, planting additional trees and adding dimensional space.
  • Community gathering features, constructing a small gazebo meeting place and a water feature.
  • Event preparations, to ensure the garden is ready to serve as a beautiful focal point at future community events.

McFadden has lived in Elbert County with her family for over 25 years. Deeply invested in Elbert County, she and her husband operate Colorado Greenhouse Builders and specialize in custom greenhouse consultations, geothermal heating, design, and installation.

“The Independence Community extends its appreciation to Annette McFadden and all resident gardeners whose work over the seasons has helped make these next steps possible,” added Kristin Cross, Independence Community’s lifestyle director. “Stay tuned, additional information about gardening classes and volunteer opportunities will be shared in future resident newsletters!”
