Meaningful Ways to Give Back: Volunteer Opportunities in Elbert County

Nov 20, 2025

At Independence, we believe that strong communities are built through connection and service. Elbert County offers a wide range of volunteer opportunities for those who want to contribute their time, skills, or resources to meaningful causes. Whether your interests involve supporting local students, helping families and children, or serving veterans and first responders, many organizations are making a difference right here in our backyard. Below are several local nonprofits and community groups that Craft Companies and the Independence Community have wholeheartedly supported. Each of these organizations would greatly benefit from your volunteer involvement as well!

Elizabeth Education Foundation

The Elizabeth Education Foundation supports Elizabeth schools by expanding opportunities beyond what district funding provides. The organization awards teacher grants for classroom innovation, senior scholarships, and student recognition through programs such as STARS. Volunteers are always needed for events, fundraising, and community involvement outreach.

Elbert County Coalition for Outreach (ECCO)

ECCO is a coalition of local service agencies, businesses, and individuals dedicated to addressing essential community needs. The organization operates a thrift store in Kiowa, offering food, clothing, and emergency household supplies. Volunteers can assist with donation sorting, help customers at the store, and coordinate outreach efforts and programs.

Elbert County 4-H (Colorado State University Extension)

4-H is a youth development program for children and teens ages 5 to 18. The program emphasizes leadership, confidence, and hands-on learning through projects, demonstrations, and community service. Volunteers may serve as project leaders, mentors, or event support, helping youth explore new skills and interests. To learn more about how you can help, contact Elbert County Extension at 303-621-3162.

Elbert County Sheriff’s Office Foundation

The Elbert County Sheriff’s Office Foundation supports our first responders, especially during times of injury or in the event of a line-of-duty death. The foundation helps with benevolence funds, appreciation initiatives, and community support awareness. The organization’s flagship event is the Back the Badge fundraiser, which continues to grow each year. Volunteers are welcome to support fundraising efforts and administrative tasks: reach out to the sheriff’s office for more information.

American Legion Post 82

American Legion Post 82 in Elizabeth supports veterans through advocacy, benefits assistance, community events, and youth programs. The organization regularly seeks volunteers to assist with program coordination and community outreach initiatives. If you’d like to meet this group, all are invited to Friday Night Social Hour.

Dads of Elbert County

Dads of Elbert County is a community-based nonprofit dedicated to helping neighbors in need. The organization mobilizes volunteers to assist with manual labor, home repairs, and emergency response efforts. Volunteers with trade skills are especially valued, though all are welcome.
